Panadero

Ah - that delicious and unforgettable aroma of fresh-baked bread. I remember that we had freshly baked bread delivery twice a day. What a joy to get that loaf of warm delicious bread that you enjoyed for lunch and then later afternoon snack and dinner. The panadero was that guy that baked the goods and deliver them to your home.

The panadero became your great resource for baked goods. I remember bakeries like La Ceiba, La Guardia and other great places where bread was king. What fun to sneak in the kitchen and take a piece of fresh warm bread.

   El Cortador de Caña

The time of the "zafra" is here and the men and women that work on the sugar fields had to go to work. The arduous work of cutting the sugar cane was performed and the sweet elixir was extracted from the cane. Without them, we would not be able to enjoy the sweet grain in our "cafe cubano" most popular in cafes and homes, as well as the fabulous rum produced and enjoyed all over the world.

An image of the fields with the beautiful sugar cane moving in the breeze and the "carretas" transporting the cut cane to the "central o ingenio" to process is remembered.

   El Pirulero

This picturesque vendor was seen in the streets and parks of Cuba, especially near the school entrances. He was selling his sweet treats called pirulies and cariocas. These delicious candies were made of flavored sugar with different flavors. These were popular among older and younger folks. Some of the vendors traded empty bottles for pirulies or cariocas.

   Bongosero

This popular musician that we saw on the streets, in the "solar" , with orchestras in night clubs playing great popular melodies. This musician played with the popular orchestras of the day. Always the "bongosero" had the opportunity to show off their artistry playing a solo of bongo that got into the soul that excited the public and lifted the spirits.

The "bongoseros" played their soul and feeling into their music. El "Priquiti" "pa" of the bongo is unforgettable and the fire and the passion that goes into it is memorable. Always part of the soul of the land and the richness of the culture.
