Figurine Sculptures II

Bodeguero

What a memory. La bodega de la esquina, that place near our house where you could purchase your frijoles, arroz the mandados o factura to prepare a good daily meal.
Remember "Jose," "Pepe," "Manuel", or "Andres," the guy behind the counter that became your friend. You could talk to him, joke with him and ask for a favor to get the ingredients you needed. The guy came to your house on a weekly or monthly basis with la factura. This was part of the life of the vibrant city. I will always remember fondly all the bodegueros that I met in my lifetime.

Frutero

The "fruteria" - Oh, that was the place where you got your delicious fruits and vegetables, the mangoes, avocados, mameyes, pineapples, and "platanos manzanos".

The "frutero" had a stand with all the goods on display. There were also street vendors singing their great "pregones" to announce their delicious merchandise. It is lovely to remember "el chinito Jose" with his avocados and other fruits coming down the street offering his goods.

El billetero was a colorful character that was encountered every day throughout the city of Havana.
He was a vendor representative of the different authorized "Loteria Nacional" houses offering the people an opportunity at winning the coveted "Premio Gordo", grand prize.

The colorful establishments where the "billetes" were sold added flavor and color to the city.

La Lavandera

La lavandera, was the woman that earned her living washing and ironing clothes for people.
You saw her with her chancletas de palo on her feet, standing at the "batea", tub full of clothes, soaking to be washed.

One can imagine that clothes line full of just washed clothes smelling clean and drying in the sunshine and breeze. After the clothes dried they were starched, ironed, and ready to go back to their customers.
